In a dual servo brake system, there are two hydraulic cylinders, one on each side of the trailer brake. When the driver applies the brakes in the towing vehicle, hydraulic pressure is transmitted to both hydraulic cylinders simultaneously. By having two hydraulic cylinders, the dual servo brake system can provide a more balanced and responsive braking experience.

Free backing trailer brake is to allow the trailer to move in reverse without engaging the brakes. When a vehicle with surge brakes is backing up, the natural momentum of the trailer causes the surge coupler to compress, which activates the brakes. However, in the case of a free backing trailer brake, this backward compression is prevented from engaging the brakes.
